Mark Rinehart: Coaching for Life
“Whether it’s the coaching staff, teachers, or administrators, we’re all working toward the same goal: giving our students the best possible experience.”

For Mark Rinehart, Vandalia Schools isn’t just a workplace—it’s where his passions for education, athletics, and community converge. Over the past 15 years, Mark has made a significant impact as a teacher, coach, and mentor, shaping students both in the classroom and on the field.
A native of Flora, Mark grew up immersed in sports, playing football, basketball, and baseball throughout high school. “I wasn’t the most talented, but I always worked hard,” Mark says. “That mindset carried me into adulthood, and it’s what I try to instill in my students and players today.”
Mark began his teaching career in Ramsey, where he coached baseball and basketball while teaching physical and driver’s education. It was there that he first worked under Dr. Jennifer Garrison, now Vandalia’s superintendent. “She was my principal back then,” he recalls. “It’s been great to work with her again in Vandalia and see how her leadership has elevated the district.”
Since joining Vandalia Schools 15 years ago, Mark has become a fixture in its athletic programs. He currently serves as the head coach for the varsity girls’ basketball team and as the defensive coordinator for the football team. His dedication extends far beyond game days, with early morning weight room sessions, countless bus trips, and long hours spent strategizing with fellow coaches.
“What I love about coaching is the chance to teach life lessons,” Mark says. “Athletics is about more than winning. It’s about learning how to handle failure, work hard, and be part of something bigger than yourself. Those are lessons that stick with you for life.”
Mark’s commitment to fostering resilience and teamwork comes through in his coaching philosophy. Whether he’s guiding his football players to trust each other or helping his basketball team navigate challenges on and off the court, his focus is always on building character. “You might not go D1 or play professionally,” Mark says, “but the lessons you learn through sports—discipline, perseverance, and responsibility—prepare you for life.”
His role as a coach also allows him to connect with students in ways that extend beyond the classroom. “Sometimes, we spend as much time with these kids as their families do,” he notes. “That gives us a unique opportunity to be positive role models and help them grow into responsible young men and women.”
Mark’s dedication doesn’t stop at school. A father of four, he stays busy coaching his children’s sports teams and supporting their many activities. His oldest daughter, Caroline, is in junior high, while his twin sons, Brody and Nolan, are in fifth grade, and his youngest son is in second grade. “My wife and I are always on the go,” he laughs. “But it’s a blessing to see our kids thrive and enjoy the same lessons I try to teach my players.”
Reflecting on his time in Vandalia, Mark is quick to praise his colleagues and the district’s leadership. “The sense of teamwork here is incredible,” he says. “Dr. Garrison has fostered a culture of collaboration, and that spirit trickles down through every level of the district. Whether it’s the coaching staff, teachers, or administrators, we’re all working toward the same goal: giving our students the best possible experience.”
Mark also values Vandalia’s supportive community, which rallies around its schools in remarkable ways. “This town shows up,” he says. “From cheering at games to supporting programs like dual credit courses, people here care about the future of our kids. That makes a huge difference.”
Looking ahead, Mark hopes to continue his work in Vandalia, helping students and athletes reach their full potential. “At the end of the day, it’s not about me,” he says. “It’s about these kids and the lives they’re going to lead. If I can play a small part in helping them succeed, that’s what matters most.”
Mark Rinehart’s story is one of dedication, hard work, and a commitment to shaping not just athletes, but future leaders. Through his passion for coaching and education, he exemplifies the values that make Vandalia Schools a cornerstone of the community.
