Brian Kern: Guiding Vandalia’s Next Generation

“That jump to high school is a big one,” he says. “Students suddenly have more independence and opportunities, and we want them to be ready to hit the ground running.”

Brian Kern’s connection to Vandalia Schools runs deep. A proud alumnus, a former teacher, and now a seasoned junior high principal in his 13th year, Brian embodies the spirit of dedication and growth that defines the district. His journey reflects a life shaped by family, athletics, and an unwavering commitment to education and what’s best for kids.

Growing up in Vandalia, Brian excelled both in the classroom and on the basketball court, a passion that led him to Illinois State University, where he played college ball. While his original goal was to become a physical therapist, Brian’s senior year brought a change of heart. “I missed basketball and realized I wanted to stay connected to it,” he recalls. That realization drew him to coaching, which ultimately led to his career in education.

After earning his teaching credentials at Bradley University, Brian and his wife, Beth—a fellow Vandalia graduate and now a high school guidance counselor—decided to return to their hometown. “The timing was perfect,” Brian says. “We wanted to raise our family in a community we knew and loved.” Over the years, Brian has transitioned from teaching high school science to becoming an administrator, embracing each role with a focus on building strong relationships and fostering student growth.

As junior high principal, Brian works closely with staff to ensure that every decision prioritizes students’ best interests. “We don’t always agree on how to achieve our goals,” he says, “but that’s where great ideas come from—collaboration and respectful debate.” This approach has fostered a team atmosphere at the junior high, where teachers and staff work together to provide a nurturing environment for students during one of the most transformative periods of their lives.

Brian sees junior high as a critical stage in a student’s development. “At this age, they’re coming into their own intellectually, socially, and physically,” he explains. “It’s a sensitive time, and our job is to guide them with care and encouragement.” He emphasizes the importance of passionate educators who serve as positive role models, helping students navigate challenges and build confidence for the future.

One area of focus for Brian and his team is improving the transition between junior high and high school. “That jump to high school is a big one,” he says. “Students suddenly have more independence and opportunities, and we want them to be ready to hit the ground running.” This year, Brian has worked with staff from both schools to create a smoother transition, particularly for freshmen, ensuring they feel supported as they adjust to a new environment.

Brian’s passion for athletics remains a cornerstone of his leadership philosophy. “Athletics teach life lessons that go beyond the classroom,” he says. “They teach kids how to handle failure, work hard, and push through adversity.” He encourages all students to get involved, whether through sports, music, or clubs. “We have so many opportunities here in Vandalia—there’s something for everyone,” he adds.

Beyond the school walls, Brian values the strong community partnerships that enrich the district. “We can’t do this alone,” Brian says. “It takes all of us—parents, teachers, coaches, and community members—working together to create the best opportunities for our kids.”

Reflecting on his own journey, Brian acknowledges the importance of trusting instincts and embracing change. “Looking back, I’d tell my younger self to enjoy the moment more,” he says. “Life isn’t just about planning for the future—it’s about appreciating where you are and making the most of it.” This perspective has guided him throughout his career, inspiring him to approach each day with purpose and gratitude.

Brian Kern’s story is one of dedication, resilience, and a deep love for his community. As he leads Vandalia Junior High, he remains focused on the shared mission of preparing students for success—not just in academics, but in life. With his guidance and the support of a committed team, Vandalia Schools continue to shine as a beacon of opportunity and growth for students and families alike.
