“Call Me Ollie.”

“Ollie’s love for sports isn’t just about competition—it’s about the life lessons they teach.”

Ollie Whitehead embodies the vibrant energy of Vandalia High School. As a junior, Ollie excels both in academics and athletics, showcasing her competitive nature across volleyball, basketball, and softball. Her journey is defined by her drive to succeed, her appreciation for her community, and her determination to enjoy every step of the way.

Born as Olive Whitehead, Ollie has embraced the nickname she’s had for as long as she can remember. Originally from nearby Brownstown, she moved to Vandalia in seventh grade and quickly found her footing in a new environment. “It’s only about 15 minutes away,” she says. “But coming here gave me new opportunities, and I’m grateful for that.”

Athletics is where Ollie truly shines. Of the three sports she plays, basketball is her favorite, and she’s been playing since third grade. “A lot of kids stop after a few years, but I just kept going,” she explains. Her dedication is fueled by her love for the game and the camaraderie of her team. She credits Coach Rinehart, Vandalia’s basketball coach, for his high energy and motivating style. “He’s the ultimate hype man,” Ollie says with a smile. “Even at 5 a.m. practices, he’s already yelling and ready to go. He really pushes us to give our best.”

Ollie’s competitive edge extends beyond the court. She admits that being one year younger than her older brother, a senior at Vandalia High, has created a healthy sibling rivalry. “We’re always trying to one-up each other,” she says. “I think that’s part of what drives me to work so hard.”

That work ethic translates to her academics, where Ollie is a straight-A student. While she admits that pre-calculus has been a challenge this year, she takes pride in pushing herself to excel. “I always try my hardest in everything,” she says. “Whether it’s in sports or school, I want to be the best I can be.”

For Ollie, the best part of school—besides athletics—is spending time with her friends and connecting with teachers who inspire her. One standout is Mrs. Michel, her speech teacher, who describes Ollie as fun, energetic, and hardworking. “She makes learning enjoyable,” Ollie says. “That’s something I really appreciate.”

Although Ollie hasn’t yet settled on plans for her future, she dreams of attending college somewhere near a beach. “I love the beach,” she says. “Hawaii, Greece, Florida—anywhere with sand and waves would be amazing.” For now, she’s focused on making the most of her remaining time at Vandalia High, excelling in her sports and academics while enjoying the friendships and memories she’s building.

Ollie’s love for sports isn’t just about competition—it’s about the life lessons they teach. “Athletics has taught me the value of hard work and how to be part of a team,” she reflects. “It’s not just about winning; it’s about pushing yourself and being there for your teammates.”

When asked what makes Vandalia special, Ollie points to the supportive community and dedicated coaches who go above and beyond for their teams. “Every school has sports, but here, the coaches really care,” she says. “They make a difference in how we grow as athletes and people.”

Ollie also draws inspiration from her family, particularly her mom, who she describes as her biggest supporter. “Anything I need, she’s there for me,” Ollie says. Her Aunt Chloe, who lives in Colorado, is another role model, showing Ollie the value of pursuing one’s passions—whether it’s skiing in the mountains or simply living life to the fullest.

Looking back on her journey, Ollie has one piece of advice for her younger self: “Keep working hard and being who you are. If you stick with it, you’ll achieve what you want.”

Ollie Whitehead’s story is one of determination, heart, and a commitment to enjoying life’s journey. As she continues to grow and pursue her passions, she represents the very best of Vandalia—hardworking, spirited, and full of promise for the future.
