Dreaming Big: Vanessa Ley’s Path to Entrepreneurship
“The teachers and students here really help each other.”

Vanessa Ley, an 11th-grade student at Meridian CUSD #101, is a young woman with a clear vision for her future. Vanessa dreams of starting her own business—a passion she’s nurtured since middle school. Balancing academics, extracurricular activities, and preparations for college, she embodies the determination and resilience that define Meridian students.
Vanessa’s entrepreneurial aspirations focus on creative crafts, including crocheting, Cricut projects, and making personalized items like cups and beanies. Inspired by her uncle, who recently started his own business, Vanessa envisions herself building something similar. “I’ve wanted to start my own business since middle school,” she shares. “I love the idea of creating things and making them personal for people.”
Vanessa’s interest in business was further cultivated by a business math class she took during her freshman year. “It was one of my favorite math classes,” she says. “We learned about banking, credit cards, and interest—things that are really important for running a business.”
While she hasn’t yet taken other business courses at Meridian, she’s already learning from her family. Her uncle and aunt not only run their own craft business but also share tips and techniques with her, reinforcing her dreams and providing her with a foundation for the future.
Vanessa’s commitment to her school and community extends beyond her entrepreneurial goals. As a cheerleader for the basketball team, she is an enthusiastic supporter of her peers. Though she started cheerleading later than some, Vanessa’s passion and energy shine through during games. “I didn’t do gymnastics or tumbling growing up,” she admits with a laugh, “but I’m great at cheering and jumping.”
Earlier in the year, Vanessa also played volleyball, splitting her time between practices and cheerleading responsibilities. Her ability to juggle multiple activities speaks to her strong work ethic and dedication.
As a first-generation college student in her family, Vanessa is determined to pave the way for her siblings. She’s already exploring colleges like Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIUC) and Southeast Missouri State University (SEMO), both of which offer programs that align with her goals.
Vanessa credits her guidance counselor, Mr. Washam, for helping her navigate the college application process. “He’s been a big help,” she says. “He calls us up to his office if he knows we’re interested in college, and he helps us with applications and figuring out what’s best for us.”
Meridian’s supportive environment has played a key role in Vanessa’s journey. One example stands out in her mind: “Last year, one of my teachers, Ms. Scott, bought me yarn to support my interest in crocheting. That meant so much to me.” Acts like these reinforce the sense of community and encouragement that make Meridian special.
For Vanessa, success isn’t just about her own achievements—it’s also about giving back. “If I could wish for anything, it would be to help my mom,” she says. “She’s had some struggles, and I want to support her and my siblings.”
Vanessa is the third of four children, and her close-knit family is a source of both motivation and pride. Her drive to succeed stems from a desire to set an example for her younger sister while honoring the sacrifices her mom has made.
Vanessa finds the people at Meridian to be “kind, accepting, and loving.” These qualities, she explains, create a safe and supportive environment where students can thrive. “The teachers and students here really help each other,” she says. “If someone’s having a bad day, they take the time to talk to you or just let you have a moment to yourself. It makes a big difference.”
Vanessa appreciates how her teachers encourage students to dream big and pursue their goals. From helping her prepare for college to supporting her personal interests, Meridian has been instrumental in shaping her path.
As Vanessa prepares for her senior year, she remains focused on her goals. Whether it’s opening her own craft business, excelling in her final year of high school, or stepping onto a college campus as the first in her family, she is determined to make her dreams a reality.
