Addison Tharp: A Rising Star in Sports and Positivity
“If someone’s having a bad day, I try to lift them up. I want to help people see the good and move forward.”

Addison Tharp, an eighth-grade student at Mercer County Junior High, exemplifies the energy and optimism that make the district a vibrant place to learn and grow. Balancing academics and a packed sports schedule, Addison has earned a reputation as a student who works hard, supports her peers, and inspires others with her positive attitude.
Originally from Alexis, Addison moved to Mercer County four years ago, bringing with her a love of learning and a family deeply rooted in sports. The transition has only strengthened her ties to athletics and academics. “I love this school,” she says. “It’s smaller, so everyone knows each other, and the community is always cheering us on.”
Addison’s connection to the community is especially evident through her involvement in sports. She participates in four athletic programs: cross country, cheerleading, softball, and club volleyball. Volleyball, however, holds a special place in her heart. “I love volleyball because it’s all about teamwork,” she says. “You have to communicate, leave the drama at the door, and support each other. It teaches you so much about life.”
As a setter, Addison plays a key role on the volleyball court, often acting as the team’s communicator. “I talk to the hitters to see what they need,” she explains. “It’s about making adjustments and making sure everyone’s on the same page.” Addison also emphasizes the importance of sportsmanship, not only with teammates but with officials and opponents. “You have to stay calm, even when things don’t go your way. Everyone’s watching—teammates, coaches, even scouts. How you handle yourself matters.”
Beyond volleyball, Addison’s dedication shines in her academic pursuits. She is among a small group of eighth graders taking algebra, positioning herself for advanced math courses in high school. “It’s tough, but I go in for help every day,” she says. “I want to be ready for geometry next year.” Her favorite class this year is history, particularly lessons about colonial times, which she finds fascinating. “I love learning how people lived in the past,” she adds. “It’s so different from today.”
Addison’s love of learning and leadership stems from an early experience with her kindergarten teacher, Mrs. Sharp. “She made every day special,” Addison recalls. “She set the stage for my love of school.” That foundation has carried her through years of growth and discovery, shaping her into a student who values hard work and kindness.
Addison’s positive outlook is a hallmark of her personality, something she credits to her mother. “My mom always told me to be positive because life’s more fun that way,” she says. That mindset has made Addison a trusted friend and a “hype person” for her peers. “If someone’s having a bad day, I try to lift them up,” she explains. “I want to help people see the good and move forward.”
Her family’s sports legacy also plays a significant role in her life. Addison’s two older half-sisters, both standout athletes, have inspired her with their achievements in basketball and softball. “I grew up watching their games and wanting to be like them,” she says. Her father, a former coach and construction worker, has also been a guiding influence. “He’s always encouraged me to work hard and have fun,” she notes.
Addison’s aspirations extend beyond junior high and high school. She dreams of playing volleyball in college and pursuing a career in physical therapy. “I want to help athletes recover from injuries and get back to doing what they love,” she says. Her drive to support others reflects the same teamwork and compassion she demonstrates on the volleyball court.
When asked what she loves most about Mercer County, Addison points to the community’s unwavering support. “Local businesses put up posters to cheer us on, and people always show up to our games,” she says. “You can feel the encouragement everywhere you go.” That sense of connection fuels Addison’s determination to give back, whether through her leadership on the court or her dedication to her studies.
Addison Tharp’s story is one of resilience, teamwork, and a belief in the power of positivity. As she continues to grow and chase her dreams, she embodies the best of Mercer County—bright, hardworking, and ready to make a difference.
