Kynlee Payne: A Multi-Talented Athlete Shining in Benton Jr. High Sports

“It’s been such a great environment to grow in.”

Kynlee Payne, an 8th grader at Benton Jr. High, is the epitome of an all-around athlete. However, cheerleading currently holds a special place in Kynlee’s heart. Having joined the team in 7th grade after initially not making it as a 6th grader, she has grown tremendously, overcoming challenges along the way.

“I’ve always loved tumbling, but I took a year off when I thought I’d play basketball,” Kynlee shares. “Coming back to it, I struggled with a mental block, but I’m finally getting past it.”

This determination has paid off, and Kynlee now participates as a flyer during the starting lineup, showcasing her skill and courage. What she enjoys most about cheerleading, however, is the camaraderie. “It’s about being with my friends, cheering on our teams, and sharing those moments together,” she says.

Kynlee has been playing volleyball since 6th grade, drawn to the sport by the fun and friendships it offers. “I love volleyball, but I know I’ll have to choose between it and cheer in high school,” she says. “Cheer and softball are my favorites, so those will probably win out.”

Still, her experience on the volleyball court has taught her valuable lessons about teamwork and determination—qualities that carry over into all areas of her life.

Last year, Kynlee discovered her talent for track. Initially unsure about her running ability, she gave it a shot after excelling in a team speed drill during travel softball practice. The results were impressive: she competed in the 100-meter, 200-meter, and as the anchor in the 4x200 relay.

“Being the anchor was nerve-wracking,” she admits. “You’re the last person, and it’s up to you to make up the difference if you’re behind. But I loved the challenge.”

The 4x200 relay quickly became her favorite event, highlighting her competitive spirit and ability to handle pressure.

Softball has been a constant in Kynlee’s life since she first picked up a bat at age five. “It’s probably my favorite sport,” she says. “Even when it gets stressful, I can’t imagine not playing it.”

During the school season, Kynlee plays a variety of positions, from outfield to shortstop, showcasing her versatility. In travel ball with the SI Irish, she focuses more on outfield, where her speed and agility shine.

While none of her closest friends are on the school softball team, Kynlee has made new friendships through the sport. “It’s been a great way to connect with different people,” she says.

With such a packed athletic schedule, balancing academics can be challenging, but Kynlee manages it with discipline and determination. Her favorite subject is math, and she’s considering a future in the medical field as an ultrasound technician or ICU nurse.

“I’ve always been interested in the medical field,” she says. “It’s something I’d love to pursue, and I think it would be really fulfilling.”

Kynlee is also exploring college options, with the University of Tennessee at the top of her list. “It just seems like a fun college,” she says. “The football games, the campus—it’s exciting to think about.”

As she looks ahead to high school, Kynlee is preparing to focus on cheerleading and softball while continuing to excel in her academics. Her journey at Benton Jr. High has been shaped by supportive teachers, coaches, and a community that fosters growth and success.

“The teachers here are amazing,” she says. “They make coming to school enjoyable and help you succeed. It’s been such a great environment to grow in.”
