Keezley Wilson: A Journey of Determination and Connection
“It meant more than I can put into words.”

Keezley Wilson, an 8th grader at Benton Jr. High, has carved a remarkable path in athletics and leadership. Competing in cross country, basketball, and track, Keezley’s commitment to her sports is matched only by her deep appreciation for teamwork and community.
Keezley’s track accomplishments are impressive, with her third-place finish in the State 800-meter race standing as a highlight of her young career. “It was exciting not just to place, but to see how all the hard work paid off,” Keezley says. “It’s a reflection of what my coaches and teammates have done to help me improve.”
In addition to the 800-meter race, Keezley competes in the 400-meter, 4x400 relay, and other events, thriving in both individual and team settings. Her favorite event is the 4x400 relay, where she usually runs the second leg. “I love the 4x4 because it’s a group effort. You get to know your teammates better and work together toward a common goal,” she explains.
While receiving and passing the baton in a relay can be nerve-wracking, Keezley sees it as a challenge she enjoys conquering. “It’s a bit stressful, but it’s also rewarding when it goes smoothly,” she adds.
Keezley’s passion for running extends beyond the track to cross country, a sport she describes as “90% mental and 10% physical.” She values the unique challenges of cross country, from navigating wooded trails to cheering on teammates during races.
“The cross country team feels like a family,” Keezley says. “We support each other, not just during races but in all aspects of life. I’ve made close friends through the team, and those relationships mean so much to me.”
Her resilience shines through in her approach to cross country. Even during tough mental blocks, Keezley pushes forward, drawing strength from her teammates and coaches.
Keezley also brings her determination to the basketball court, where she plays for the varsity team. Despite facing challenges, including a winless record so far this season, Keezley remains optimistic and focused on growth.
“Our team is improving with every game,” she says. “We learn from each match and focus on what we’ve improved on, not just the losses.”
Keezley appreciates the supportive environment her new coaches have created, emphasizing the importance of mutual learning. “They’re getting to know us, and we’re learning from them. It’s a team effort,” she explains.
Keezley’s journey hasn’t been without obstacles. A knee injury during her volleyball season led her to physical therapy, an experience that not only helped her heal but also inspired her future career aspirations.
“I want to become a physical trainer,” Keezley shares. “Going through therapy made me realize how much I enjoy helping others recover and improve. It clicked for me—I want to make a difference like my therapists did for me.”
Her family and friends have been a source of strength, particularly during difficult times. When Keezley lost a cousin in a tragic accident, her cross country team and the Benton community rallied around her with overwhelming support. “They made me a ‘thinking of you’ basket, and it meant more than I can put into words,” Keezley recalls. “It showed me how much people care and how close-knit this community is.”
Keezley plans to continue her athletic journey in high school, focusing on cross country and track while keeping basketball as an option. Her ultimate goal is to attend college and pursue a career in physical therapy, blending her love for sports with her desire to help others.
Looking back on her time at Benton Jr. High, Keezley is most proud of the relationships she’s built. “Girls’ sports here aren’t about drama—it’s about being a family,” she says. “We support each other, and those connections go beyond the court or the field.”
