Cole Furlow: A Model of Dedication and Teamwork
“The school offers so many opportunities.”

At just 14 years old, Cole Furlow’s love for sports is apparent from the moment he begins talking about his athletic journey. As a member of the basketball, baseball, and track teams, he thrives in environments where teamwork and discipline are paramount.
Basketball holds a special place in Cole’s heart. Standing nearly six feet tall, he plays center but also steps into the role of guard when needed, showcasing his versatility. “I like basketball because it’s a team sport, and I love contributing to the team,” Cole shares. “Plus, I enjoy blocking people—it’s one of my favorite parts of the game.”
His admiration for players like Dennis Rodman, known for their intensity and willingness to hustle, influences his style. “I watch Rodman highlights and try to emulate his energy—diving for balls, rebounding, and being physical,” Cole says with a grin.
In baseball, Cole excels as a center fielder, known for his quick reflexes and strong batting skills. “I’ve had a few diving catches in games and usually lead off in the batting order,” he says. His speed on the bases—often stealing home—makes him a standout player.
Track is Cole’s newest venture, but he’s already making strides. Competing in events like the high jump and relay races, he’s discovered yet another arena to channel his athleticism.
Cole’s commitment extends beyond athletics; he’s equally dedicated to his studies. This year, he joined the Scholar Bowl team, competing in academic challenges that test his knowledge in areas like sports trivia and geography. Despite being new to the team, Cole has already contributed to their early successes.
In addition to Scholar Bowl, Cole is enrolled in advanced math and art classes. His artistic talents, inherited from his father, shine through in projects like a sock puppet he created resembling his science teacher, Mr. Krieger. “Advanced art is fun,” Cole says. “It gives me a chance to be creative.”
When asked how he balances such a packed schedule, Cole credits his time management skills and a supportive environment at Benton Jr. High. “The school offers so many opportunities—band, robotics, advanced classes—and the teachers here genuinely care about helping us succeed,” he explains.
Cole’s leadership skills are evident not only in his athletic achievements but also in his interactions with peers and adults. His coaches describe him as a team player who leads by example. Whether diving for a loose ball in basketball or cheering on a teammate during a track meet, Cole embodies the spirit of collaboration.
While Cole dreams of playing basketball at the collegiate level—or even making it to the NBA—he’s also considering a career as a lineman, working on power lines. “I’ve always been interested in trade school,” he shares. “But if I get a scholarship to play basketball, I’d love to go to SIU Carbondale. It’s close to home, and I’d still be able to see my family.”
Cole’s thoughtful approach to his future reflects his grounded personality and strong support system. His family, including an older brother who manages Joe’s Pizza and a sister expecting her first child, plays a significant role in shaping his values.
Cole’s pride in Benton Jr. High is unmistakable. He describes the school as a place filled with opportunities and supportive teachers. “Benton is the best,” he says. “There’s so much to do here, and every teacher has something different to teach you. They really care.”
For Cole, being a Ranger means more than just wearing the jersey—it’s about embracing the motto, “Learners Today, Leaders Tomorrow, Rangers Forever.”
