Welcome to the Winter edition of Connections47! This issue celebrates the vital role athletics play in the education of our students, shaping not only their physical skills but also their character, teamwork, and determination.
Sports are more than just games at Benton Grade School—they are opportunities for our students to grow as individuals and as a community. From basketball to volleyball, track, and cheerleading, our athletic programs foster the discipline and camaraderie that prepare students for success in all areas of life.
You’ll meet incredible student-athletes like Ella Stanley, who exemplifies balance by excelling on the court, the field, and in the classroom, and Keezley Wilson, a standout in track and cross country whose resilience inspires those around her. Sandler Sloan demonstrates the strategic thinking and leadership of a point guard, while Dakota Trill thrives on the energy and teamwork of the basketball court. Brodie Severin, known for his sharp three-point shots and leadership, reminds us of the value of discipline and hard work on the court and in the classroom. Meanwhile, Hadley Moyers and Kynlee Payne demonstrate how dedication to volleyball, track, and cheerleading creates lasting connections and fosters growth both on and off the field.
Our programs flourish because of dedicated coaches and mentors like Kailee McCollum, who builds confidence and communication in her volleyball players, and Sydney Van Hoorebeke, who fosters school spirit and resilience in our cheerleaders. Coaches like Jordan Gunter and Drew Pettit go beyond the game, using basketball and baseball to teach life lessons about accountability, perseverance, and respect.
This issue also highlights how sports unify our community. Whether it’s parents providing meals for athletes, volunteers assisting with track meets, or cheering crowds filling the stands, your support makes all the difference. Our athletes feel the pride and encouragement of Benton every time they compete.
Athletics are an extension of the education we provide in the classroom. They teach students to set goals, overcome obstacles, and work collaboratively—a foundation that serves them well in life.
I encourage you to explore the stories in this issue and join us in celebrating the accomplishments of our students and staff. Together, we are nurturing the leaders of tomorrow, both on and off the field.
Thank you for your continued support of Benton Grade School and its athletic programs. Your involvement strengthens the spirit and success of our community.
With gratitude,
Dr. Steve Smith
Superintendent, Benton Grade School
