A community engagement initiative of Du Quoin CUSD 300.

Winter | 2026

Welcome to the inaugural issue of Red & Black.

As we open this first edition of our district magazine, I find myself reflecting on what it truly means to belong to a school community. Not simply to attend, or to work, or to live beside one another — but to take part in something that grows stronger because we are in it together. Du Quoin has always understood this truth, and the stories in this issue shine a light on it in ways both familiar and newly inspiring.

Across our classrooms, hallways, buses, and athletic fields, you will meet people who show up every day with purpose. You’ll see teachers helping students discover the power of their own voices; paraprofessionals who meet children exactly where they are; math educators building confidence step by step; high-school tutors  supporting our youngest learners; and elementary  staff creating joyful spaces where belonging begins. You’ll hear from students who are finding their strengths, from future educators preparing to return and give back, and from families who trust our schools with their most precious hopes.

You’ll also see how deeply Du Quoin is shaped by those who serve beyond the school walls. Our Ministerial Alliance reminds us what it means to hold a community together through compassion. Local businesses model opportunity through hard work and integrity. Our kitchen staff, custodians, nurses, and support staff carry out hundreds of unseen acts each day that make our schools safe and welcoming. These stories affirm that educating a child is never the work of schools alone — it is the work of a whole community.

What I love most about this collection is its honesty. These aren’t polished portraits; they are lived moments of encouragement, resilience, and human connection. They show students taking academic risks, educators expanding their craft, and helpers stepping in at the exact moment they are needed. They reveal the heart of Du Quoin: a place where every child is, supported, challenged and believed in.

As we begin this new tradition of sharing our stories, my hope is that you see yourself somewhere in these pages — in the pride you feel for our students, in the gratitude you hold for our staff, and in the belief you place in the future of this community. Thank you for walking this journey with us, and for helping make Du Quoin CUSD 300 a place where every learner can thrive.

With Pride,
Diana Rea
